Fashion design is all around us, in newspapers, in magazines, on television and online, fashion is something we cannot live without. The fashion industry worldwide is huge and growing; high street fashion alone is estimated to bring in excess of £45 billion to the UK economy each year.

From footwear to accessory design, millinery design, fashion technology, fashion buying, styling, menswear, womenswear and childrenswear design, garment construction and clothing management, there are many rewarding career opportunities for talented individuals who have the energy, enthusiasm and creativity to enter this busy and exciting world.

Fashion Design is a highly varied and constantly changing field of design. As such, there is great scope and variety to be found for qualified individuals. Fashion designers can move into a number of fields relating to their experience and interests, both on the practical side of Fashion or the more Business side as well as education and teaching. Some will work on a freelance basis and can engage in many different activities including fashion writing, individual commissions or even hiring market stalls to sell their designs. Others will join large design houses as assistant designers, under the guidance of more experienced colleagues. Fashion designers may also join larger retail outlets as visual merchandisers or buyers or move on to become teachers, technicians, tutors or lecturers in further or higher education.

Fashion design is a highly competitive field with most roles hotly contested. Fashion Designers must be prepared to be prolific through their study as fashion houses will often contact course tutors to ask for recommendations. They will need to maintain this prolificacy in their professional career.  Fashion designers will need to market themselves and their designs and constantly stay aware of market and seasonal trends. However, time, talent and effort can be rewarded with significant and varied careers.
