Photography is the process of capturing visual images, usually through a lens. Today, it is one of the most widely used processes for creating both still and moving images, and has many applications in the arts, media, medicine and industry. Photographic processes include the more traditional process of developing and printing film by hand, as well as digital processes utilising computer programmes.

There are probably two main areas of understanding and expertise involved in Photography; the capturing of an image, and the output of the image as a physical print or a reproduction for publication. Within these, there are both technical and creative demands. Photographers need to be not only visually creative – using composition, colour, tone and expression – but also technically competent in the understanding and use of equipment and materials which include everything from lights and lenses to computer software.

For those with the skills and qualifications, there are many opportunities within the Photo Imaging industry. Some photographers concentrate on its application as a fine art process; creating images for exhibition in commercial galleries and for publication. Others work both as general photographers, or specialising in one or more areas, including Advertising, Fashion, Portraiture, Photojournalism, Crime scene photography and Editorial work. Career progression within photography is not clearly defined, which gives great scope for future endeavours. Gaining a broad range of specialism’s can lead to continued and varied projects.

Newly qualified photographers will generally commence their careers as apprentices, assisting in photo shoots, researching and completing general administrative duties. Once experience and a demonstrative portfolio are achieved, Photographers can work both on a salaried basis within companies, and on a self–employed, freelance basis. The Photo Imaging industry includes not only those who produce images, but also those involved in the retail, processing and equipment side of the industry.  Additionally, photographers can move into other fields such as agent representation and for the suitably qualified, education.
