Multimedia is a term which can be used to cover a number of areas, particularly with the convergence of the creative, software and IT sectors.

We use the term Multimedia to describe the creation of interactive content for use in websites, mobiles phones and portable media players, as well as in large scale projections. Multimedia design has applications in graphic communication, web design, animation, games design and e-commerce.

Multimedia designers understand the techniques and processes used to create digital images, and to work with video, animation and sound. They are involved in the authoring and programming of software, but are concerned mainly with the development of creative, innovative content.

The Multimedia, or Interactive Media industry is a fluid and changing one, and while there are tremendous opportunities for talented and creative individuals, there are no pre-determined career paths. Having said that, the Interactive Media industry is one of the most dynamic sectors of the creative industries, is worth several billion pounds annually, and supports some of the largest areas of the economy, such as online advertising and e-commerce.

Individuals with good qualifications in Multimedia design can find employment as designers, developers and managers. They may work both on in design and production, and in business development; as project managers, information architects, content strategists, web editors or studio managers – or employed on a freelance basis. As the industry grows and develops, and new applications are found, they will also be forging new roles for themselves.
