Drawing and Painting
This course is designed for anyone who wants to develop and improve their drawing and painting skills. It provides an introduction to the use of drawing and painting media and materials, the selection and development of subject matter, and to the use of line, tone, colour, proportion, scale and composition.
The course is designed to develop confidence in handling media and materials, and in the development of creative ideas. On completion of the course, students will have acquired a broad skills base and a thorough understanding of a range of techniques and of the use of drawing and paint based media. Students will also have learned how to instigate and develop creative ideas.
Students who successfully complete this course may opt to study at a more advanced level. Options may include a drawing and painting diploma, sculpture diploma or sculpture foundation course or fine art diploma.
Preparation: Painting
Activity 4 is also concerned with observing and depicting colour. This time you are going to explore colour-using collage. We would like you to choose two objects similar to the ones you used in the previous activity, that is, a white object and an apple or an orange. We would like to take you through the process of creating a collage based on both of these objects.
The word “collage” is derived from the French, “coller”, meaning “to paste”. Introduced by the Cubists in the early part of the 20th century, this process has subsequently been widely used and is a familiar technique in contemporary art. You may already be familiar with this technique and it is an excellent way to explore colour, tone and texture.
The first task is to prepare your materials. Collect as many bits of coloured paper as possible that you feel relate visually to your chosen object. These could be taken from magazines and newspapers as well as from an assortment of scrap paper, sweet wrappers, wrapping paper or tissue paper.
You will also need your sketchbook, some PVA glue or a gluestick, and a craft knife or scissors.
