City & Guilds Sketchbook Course

This creative sketchbooks course leads to a City & Guilds level 1 Award. The course introduces you to the effective use of a sketchbook when producing creative sketchbook ideas. You'll find that the course materials provide you with instruction, advice and information on the use of a variety of different media and on the inclusion of photographs, cuttings and mixed media within your sketchbook ideas.

You will be taken through a series of activities designed to explore methods of varying the layout and approaches to recording within a sketchbook and how to develop your personal creativity through your sketchbook work.

This sketchbooks course is designed to help you to develop your personal creativity through the exploration of a wide range of media and materials. This online sketchbook course will train you to use line, tone, colour, texture and pattern, and to manipulate a variety of mark making media, papers, inks, paints and dyes using both conventional and unconventional approaches.

On completion of this course you will have developed a range of creative skills in recording and developing your sketchbook work.

Looking and Recording : Colour

The purpose of this activity is to introduce you to the possibilities of colour and to help you to see how you can make the most of your colour media. In order to do this you are going to begin by experimenting with your media to create 'samples' of primary and secondary colours to make an individual 'colour wheel'.

You will see in our examples that we have used a small sketchbook and created pages of colour. We have used coloured pencils, chalks, oil pastels as well as coloured card and thread. You could use these or any other media that you have available to you. See 'media' for some suggestions if you are unsure. We would also like you to use magazine cuttings of colour to create colour collage. You can either use a small sketchbook as we have, or create samples of colour within your A3 sketchbook.
