Interest is charged on your loan while you're studying up until until you're due to start repaying your loan. Interest is charged at the rate of inflation (RPI – Retail Price Index) plus three per cent.
When you're due to start repaying your loan, the amount of interest you're charged depends on how much you earn.
You will be charged the following rates of interest:
• the rate of inflation if you earn £21,000 or less
• the rate of inflation plus up to three per cent if you earn between £21,000-£41,000
• the rate of inflation plus three per cent if you earn over £41,000
Full-time and part-time students who start their course after 1 September 2012 begin paying back their student loan if they leave the course early or after graduation and once they earn more than £21,000 a year. If their income falls below £21,000 a year, their repayments stop.
New full-time students will start to repay in the April after they leave their course.
New part-time students start making repayments in the April, four years after the start of their course, or in the April after they leave the course, whichever comes first.
Example 1: if you start a 6 year part-time course in September 2012 and have a job that pays £25,000, you'll start to repay your loan in April 2016 even though you are still studying.
April 2016 is the earliest repayments will begin for full-time and part-time students.
Example 2: if you start a 2 year part-time course in September 2012 and have a job that pays £25,000, you'll only start repaying in April 2016 – after you've finished your course. Repayment is based on income at the time repayment is due.
If you pay through PAYE, your repayments will be deducted automatically each month from your pay. If you are using self-assessment, other arrangements are in place.
*Subject to Parliamentary approval
Extra financial help will be available to disabled students studying on a full or part-time basis through Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs).
These grants are paid in addition to the standard student finance package. They do not depend on income and do not have to be repaid.
