Universities Planning to Charge Highest Fee
- 09 June 2011
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has reported that many more universities than expected will charge the top tuition fee of £9,000 and this could lead to a funding gap worth millions of pounds.
Further, PAC have warned that any over-spend could lead to even fewer university places.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills says the cost to government will not be known until late next year when students have enrolled and received their loans.
When the cap on fees was lifted last year, ministers said the top rate of £9,000 could only be charged in "exceptional circumstances".
As the government pays fees upfront and recoups the money many years after students graduate, PAC says this could cost taxpayers an extra £95m a year.
Reports suggest the average fee planned by universities is £8,765 rather than the £7,500 estimated by the government.
Flexible, affordable learning
This will not apply to students enrolled with the Interactive Design Institute. IDI are holding their fees at the same level as last year. IDI offrers a range of discounts and flexible payment options. And for the first time students enrolling on our BA Graphic Design course will be able to apply for fee and course grants to support their studies.
Grants of up to £1,495 per year are available to qualifying students.
We are still accepting applications for our degree level courses starting in June 2011. We have places available in Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Photography, Interactive Media Design and Product Design
